Gas Fireplace
Logs
It’s a fact that gas fireplace logs are
becoming all the rage. Gone are the days when people had to
deal with soot and ash when using a fireplace. Because of
convenient gas units, you can enjoy a traditional looking fire
without the hassles of traditional fireplaces. Just like units
that burn real wood though, it’s important to remember that
those that use gas logs have to be installed and used with
safety in mind. Here are some top tips to remember.
· Gas logs are either vented or unvented.
Your first order of business before you even install gas logs
is to find out if your area legally allows either type. Some
regions do not allow unvented gas fireplaces to be installed in
homes and buildings.
· Gas fireplaces should be installed only by
certified and licensed experts. This is to ensure that all
building codes and safety measures are met. Your installer
should also be the first one you should ask about appropriate
gas log sizes for your fireplace. If your installer has a
service warranty, make sure you arrange for regular
inspections.
· Make sure your house is equipped with
smoke and gas detectors. Accidental fires can still erupt from
gas fireplaces. Gas poisoning too is possible so gas detectors
are very important especially if you have an unvented
fireplace.
· Always choose gas logs with safety pilots
or detectors. These will automatically shut down the gas and
the fire in case carbon monoxide levels rise and oxygen levels
become depleted.
· Vented gas fireplace logs require the
dampers to be open when in use. Don’t forget to check your flu
or damper before using your fireplace. In some places, building
codes require dampers to be permanently open.
· If you have a traditional fireplace, you
may just consider installing a gas fireplace insert. Before
doing so however, have your old fireplace inspected. The
chimney should be thoroughly cleaned first and checked for
damages or insufficient construction before a gas log can be
used with it.
· Do not leave anything that can burn in
front or near your fireplace. Gas logs should also be kept far
from the walls of your fireplace.
· Do not sleep while your fireplace is
turned on. It is also a good personal policy not to leave it
unattended for extended periods of time especially when you
have young kids. Incidentally, children should not be allowed
to operate gas fireplaces.
· Even with a professional installer around,
make sure you understand manufacturer instructions. If there is
anything that is not clear to you, ask your installer or
manufacturer for clarifications.
· Make sure you have a well ventilated room
when using gas logs. It is best however to simply not install
unvented logs in small, cramped rooms.
Gas fireplace logs are truly appealing and
attractive. They can however be potentially dangerous when not
installed or used correctly. Make sure you put safety in mind
first if you decide to use a gas log in your home.
